Comparative study of the philosophical views of the five schools of Vedanta

Abstract

Vedanta school is one of the six philosophical schools of India. The teachings of this school are based on the interpretation of the Upanishads and their sutras known as "Brahma Sutra" or "Vedante Sutra" by five Indian philosophers and sages named Shankara, Ramanuja, Madhava, Nimbarke and Vallabh. Although the basis of the interpretation of these philosophers is the same, their views on the concepts of God, the world, the soul, knowledge and salvation are different from each other; This article examines the views of these five philosophers with a comparative method and has come to the conclusion that their views range from the unity of existence to the plurality of existence and unlike Shankara, whose views are idealistic and consider the world as Maya (illusion). And it is believed that Atman is the same as Brahman, but other philosophers are inclined to realism and consider the world and spirits to be a relative reality distinct from Brahman and they consider Maya as the creative power of Brahman and believe that change occurs during creation.. Also, unlike Shankara, who considers knowledge to be the way of salvation, other philosophers also consider bhakti (sincere worship) as a means of salvation; At the same time, according to all of them, reason does not have much place and holy texts are the main source of knowledge.
