Semantic criticism of the translation of the mystical terms of the story "the Ascetic and the Thief" in the contemporary rewritings of Kalileh and Demeneh based on componential analysis

Abstract

The rituals, beliefs, culture, and worldview of a nation's ancestors can be uncovered through the study of literary texts. It is impossible to deny the impact of mysticism and its teachings on these texts. Considering the difficulty of literary texts, rewriting is a way to convey concepts to today's readers. Therefore, the review of rewrites is of great importance. Based on the descriptive-analytical method, this research aims to identify the mystical terms "The Tale of the Ascetic and the Thief" of Kalileh and Demeneh and analyze them using the method of semantic components and their importance in understanding the message of the story teller and finally how to reflect these terms. Examine and criticize in the contemporary rewritings of Kalileh and Damneh. To achieve this goal, in the first step, the mystical terms of the original text were identified, in the second step, each of these terms was explained using mystical texts close to the original text and its semantic components were extracted, and in the third step, the equivalent of these terms in Contemporary rewritings were extracted and the meanings of these equivalents were determined using contemporary cultures. In the final step, the equivalents of these terms were reviewed. The findings show that in most cases, the rewriting has not been able to transfer part of the semantic components. It seems that one of the significant obstacles for conveying the message of the original text is the translation of this type of terms and structure in the rewritings of Kalileh and Demeneh.
