This research critically analyzes and evaluates the spiritual dimensions of David Thoreau's artistic thought, focusing on his prominent work, Walden. Although Walden is recognized as a literary and philosophical work, the current study first demonstrates that it can also be considered a spiritual text. In this book, the author seeks truth and a deeper understanding of himself and the surrounding world through a simple life in nature. The present research employs qualitative analysis and a comparative study to first elucidate Thoreau's typology of spirituality and then critiques and assesses this spirituality. The findings indicate that Thoreau's spirituality is primarily philosophical, secular, and outward-looking, founded on four main components: simplicity, self-awareness, connection with nature, and contemplation of the present moment. However, Thoreau's spirituality has limitations compared to mystical traditions, as he arrives at spiritual experience solely through observation and interaction with nature, while many spiritual traditions, particularly in mysticism, emphasize meditation and inner purification. In contrast, deeper mystical experiences require an inner journey that transcends sensory data. Therefore, Thoreau's spirituality is more outward-oriented and nature-centered; despite its philosophical richness, it lacks metaphysical depth and inner cultivation, and it can be regarded as an example of an empty spirituality that does not lead to existential elevation.
