The symbolic nature of the story of Buddha’s patience against the demon of desire (Mara) in Buddhist texts, enriched with signs that are both symbolic and mythological, greatly enhances the potential for an esoteric interpretation of this narrative. In this story, Buddha’s resistance against the demon of desire (Mara) serves as a moral paradigm, presenting effective methodological approaches for practitioners on the Buddhist path to achieve Buddhahood or spiritual enlightenment. This article employs a descriptive-analytical method to identify the characteristics of the demon of desire (Mara) in Buddhist texts, analyzing certain symbolic signs of this narrative based on the explication of the moral virtue of patience in the tradition of Theravada mysticism, and examining the practical methods of self-purification within this tradition. The findings indicate that Buddhist texts, based on the Aryan insight of “the duality of good and evil in the world,” utilize allegorical language to address the spiritual challenges humans face in their struggle against the inner demon of desire, seeking suitable solutions through the development of a mythologically centered ethical discourse. Accordingly, the Theravada Buddhist texts, in elucidating the story of Buddha’s patience against Mara, strive to emphasize the transformation and renewal of the demon of desire’s temptations in the process of spiritual practice, portraying the dialectical and dynamic nature of “the struggle against the self” in achieving the utmost moral perfection.
